Sapphire Gemstone - September's Birthstone
Sapphire is a beautiful gemstone that is suitable for all types of jewllery. It comes in a large selection of colours which make it versatile and easily able to compliment many other gemstones. Here we inform you of a few different colour varieties available.
Sapphires are an increasingly desirable gemstone, not just due to the magnificent array of colours they are available in but also, because of their natural durability. These gemstones sit at number 9 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness rating, out of ten! The only natural item that is able to scratch a sapphire is a diamond and this makes them an excellent choice for engagement rings and other jewellery pieces that are expected to be worn daily.
Ceylon Sapphire colours range from very light light to an intense, deep blue. This stunning type of sapphire is commonly mined in Sri Lanka and Madagascar with a small amount coming from Africa. Identifying the origin of a sapphire can be a complicated task and is not always possible.
Pink Sapphire is also mined mainly in Sri Lanka and Madagascar. It too comes in a very light shade through to an intense, rich pink. The pastel shades of pink sapphire have been increasingly desired in engagement rings this year. Pink sapphires look stunning in a gold or rose gold band.
Yellow Sapphire has become more desired and its popularity has dramatically increased over recent years. Yellow sapphires are not always available in any shape or size as production is limited. These beautiful gemstones come in a pale yellow through to a vibrant golden yellow. Rarely, these sapphires are available in a rich orange too.
